Ingredients

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup red food coloring
  • 1/2 cup green food coloring
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until smooth and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually blend in the flour mixture until just combined.
  6. Divide the dough into two equal portions. Color one half with red food coloring and the other with green food coloring.
  7. Roll out each color of dough separately between sheets of parchment paper.
  8. Place one dough on top of the other and roll them into a log.
  9. Wrap the log in plastic wrap and refrigerate for about an hour to firm up.
  10. Slice the chilled log into rounds and place them on a baking sheet.
  11. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until lightly golden.
  12. Allow to cool before dusting with powdered sugar.

Notes

For easier creaming, allow butter to soften naturally. Use a sharp knife for clean cuts.
